I didn’t cry

When I was little
and upon a jagged blacktop
in an elementary playground
I fell, my elbow’s gentle skin torn and scorched.
I didn’t cry.

I saw my father
beat my mother while drunk
with stapler or pillow
or whatever he could lay hands on.
I didn’t cry.

The Titanic
a tragic love story,
a Romeo and Juliet on boat
as I watched feeling no emotion.
I didn’t cry.

All these heart wrenching things
that bring tear to any eye
I notice them more lucid
and how my face is still dry.

First Love
I left him after 14 months
smiling and laughing at his pain,
leaving him confused and alone.
I didn’t cry.

So it just goes to show
how things come and they go
most will wonder why
my hazels are sober and dry
and all I will tell them is
