The mother

Oh, look at her eyes
she opens them slowly
embracing her new,
god-given sight
Her eyes flicker
and dance
against the light
like the sweet ocean

Her precious gems for eyes
remind me of my youth.
Of standing in the sand,
wind whisking my kinked hair wildly,
smiling and looking into the distance
of the gentle majesty, known as the ocean.

It is the pure embodiment of her fragile gaze,
my heart overflows and I’m lost in a haze.
and reminds me of my youth and also how
my life was my own and now she has become my life.

In that, my heart promises never to suffer
she will become my day and night,
my sunshine and stars and much more.
She will be my smile and worried tears;
I’ll tickle her laughing or kiss away fears.
I’ll deal with the whining and yapping
and bapping and screams and wails.
All for a miracle; a tale among tales.

All for this one, fleeting moment, you see,
when she happens to fix her gaze upon me.
She will grasp on to me, maybe suckle my breast,
and she’ll know I’m her mother and she is mine.

Deeply, she will know that for the rest of her life,
she will soon repeat nature, and become mother and wife.
She will remember her youth and see the reflection in her child,
her child will know like she and grasp, so scented and mild.

When her child’s heart is fulfilled, so is a mother’s wish.
